J. Scott Cellars: Eugene

J. Scott Cellars wineI love discovering neat places totally by accident. Like last weekend when we stumbled across J. Scott Cellars, part of Eugene’s new “urban wine district.

Saturday, late in the afternoon, we were up in Eugene taking care of some shopping and errands before heading over to some friends’ house for dinner. Our last errand was a stop at Oregon Paddle Sports, which we found tucked into a maze of back roads in a commercial district off of West 11th. Behind them, in the same industrial complex was J. Scott Cellars, a name I was just barely familiar with.

Luckily for us, we finished our business at Oregon Paddle Sports ahead of schedule and had 40 minutes to spare before dinner.

Why not sample some wine?

Perhaps one reason I’ve been delaying exploring Eugene’s Urban Wine District is because I like tasting my wine while seeing the grape plants that produced it.

However, tasting wine at J. Scott Cellars was rather like an Oregon wine tour since they source their grapes from throughout the region. We tasted wines from grapes grown in the Columbia Valley, the Umpqua Valley, and the Rogue Valley. I was especially taken with those from the Rogue Valley and after our visit at J. Scott I’m ready to head down to there to taste more.

J. Scott also has an excellent selection of white wines. While I am usually a “red” kind of gal — and J. Scott’s reds are awesome — I fell in love with so many of the whites that I couldn’t keep track of them all. All the whites we sampled were dry, nothing sweet and cloying here.

Talking with our server, we learned that J. Scott Cellars is open Friday and Saturday evenings with a food truck on site. And they keep their facebook page updated with the food and music planned for their Friday “Wine down.”

If you are interested in learning more, there was an article posted yesterday  at the Eugene Daily News about Jonathan Oberlander, winemaker and proprietor.

J. Scott Cellars is located at 520 Commercial St. Suite G in Eugene. From West 11th, turn north onto Bertlesen, left onto W. 5th, then left on Commercial. For exact hours, including expanded summer hours, check out their website.
