Harris Bridge Dessert Wines

Some of the dessert wines created at Harris Bridge Vineyard.

Tucked into a tiny valley, between the historic Harris Covered Bridge and a railroad track, just outside the town of Philomath is Harris Bridge Vineyard which specializes in dessert wines, sweet vermouth, and aperitifs.

We’ve tasted at a lot of wineries throughout Oregon, especially in the Willamette and Umpqua Valleys. So when I first read about Harris Bridge Vineyard in the Eugene Register Guard, I knew that the owners were doing something unique. And, I knew we would soon be making a special trip to Philomath to give this winery a try.

I’m not a fan of sweet wines, much less dessert wines, and I typically avoid them when we are out wine tasting. However, I do love a nice vermouth to mix into a cocktail, and I love tasting, sampling, and supporting our small, local wineries and distilleries. While tasting at Harris Bridge Vineyard I discovered that dessert wines don’t need to be sweet and cloying. These wines were sweet, but they had a deep, rich flavor that made them a delight to taste. The winery explains the process to create the wines on their website, and it is worth a read if you are at all interested.

Beyond the excellent wines, the owners at Harris Bridge Vineyard have found a quaint setting along the Mary’s River and have created an inviting tasting room. I’m looking forward to returning with friends, perhaps in the summer for a picnic on their patio with a view of the covered bridge and near-by historic home.

Getting there: The address for Harris Bridge Vineyard is 22937 Harris Road, west of Philomath. We used the google app and got there with no problems. Once you hit the gravel section of Harris Road you’ll know you are almost there.

Please note, their tasting room is open May through November on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to check their website for details.
