Checker Lilies

I promise this blog won’t become focused solely on wildflowers. However, they are beautiful right now, and this weekend we found a wildflower that I’ve never seen before, so I have to share!

Our weekly dog-walk this weekend happened out at Bake Stewart Park at the head of Dorena Reservoir. We don’t go there very often, but this weekend I was in the mood for something a little different, and at the same time, I thought the sunny, oak/prairie habitat at the north end of the park might be full of wild flowers. I was wrong. Right now, it is just grassy (though I suspect it will get its share of wildflowers later in the spring).

What we discovered, however, is that the main part of Bake Stewart Park is alive with many different types of wildflowers. The ones which I am most excited about are the Checker Lilies (a.k.a. Chocolate Lilies or Fritillaria affinis). I’ve always loved seeing pictures of these flowers, but have never encountered them in the wild. Yesterday we saw many.

Looking up into the nodding flower, we can see why they have the common name of “checker” lily.

At Bake Stewart Park the Checker Lilies are in the grassy areas around the south end of the park. We didn’t see them at first, but once we saw one, we discovered there are many of them in there.

It has been a long while since we’ve been to Bake Stewart Park and we learned (and saw) that many changes are happening there right now. I am doing some research and will blog about it later.

Getting to Bake Stewart Park: Head out of Cottage Grove on Row River Road. At roughly 4 miles, be sure to turn left to stay on Row River Road. Bake Stewart Park is on your right, about 6 miles after the turn. The gates into the park might be closed, but there is plenty of parking off the road.
